MFD monitors active brush fire on Kahoolawe


At about 9:50 am this morning, MFD received reports of a brush fire occurring on the island of Kahoolawe. Air 1 was dispatched to respond with a Battalion Chief on board. It was confirmed that there was an active brush fire located on the southwest end of the island at Kealaikahiki. At 11:30 am, it was estimated that approximately 100 acres had already burned, and the fire moving in the mauka direction.


At this time, no active firefighting will be taking place due to uncertainties associated with unexploded ordinance. Another recon flight is planned for later this afternoon. No information is available at this time regarding damages.
