A snorkeler drowned Saturday in the area of Kamaole point, between Kamaole 2 and Kamaole 3 beach parks.

Maui Ocean Safety and Maui Fire Department personnel responded shortly after 1 p.m. after Ocean Safety officers at Kamaole 2 observed the victim and her husband snorkeling and recognized they needed assistance.

The unresponsive female victim was brought to the shoreline where Ocean Safety officers began lifesaving efforts. They were further assisted by fire personnel and medics.

Despite all efforts, officials say the victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.
